CZ Shadow 2 Compact and 75D PCR Compact

Shadow 2 Compact and CZ 75 D CompactPin

During one of my many visits to the local firearms store, I picked up the CZ Shadow 2 Blue in a spontaneous purchase. I was somewhat interested in another quality pistol and CZ is synonymous with quality. After handling it for a while, I was impressed by its smooth action and excellent trigger. Once I took it to the range, I understood all of the hype around the Shadow family of pistols. My only issue was how large it was and the weight. As with most of my spontaneous buys, I did not intend to use it as an EDC, but even for range use, it felt cumbersome. I decided to look into the CZ Shadow 2 Compact, often considered a smaller version of the aforementioned Shadow 2. However, I hesitated to spend another $1,000+ on a handgun, even though I wanted that smooth action and great trigger. This led me to explore other CZ handguns that could offer a similar experience without breaking the bank.

After some research, I landed on the CZ 75D PCR Compact. PCR stands for Police Czech Republic for whom it was originally designed for. It is similar in size and weight to the Shadow 2 Compact but cost half as much. This raised the question: was the Shadow 2 Compact really worth double the price? I was eager to find out.

Build Quality and Material

At first glance, other than the aluminum pistol grips on the Shadow 2 Compact, these two pistols look almost identical. The Shadow 2 Compact is slightly larger and weighs about three ounces more. According to CZ, the PCR’s frame is made of 7075 T6 aluminum, while the Shadow 2 Compact’s frame is made of forged 7075 aluminum. I needed to research this more and for those unfamiliar, 7075 T6 aluminum is an aircraft-grade material with one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. The “T6” designation refers to the heat treatment process that maximizes its strength. In practical terms, both frames are made from high-quality aluminum alloys. Both pistols also feature steel slides and cold hammer-forged barrels.

Controls and Handling

A distinctive difference between these pistols is their action controls. The PCR features a decocker, while the Shadow 2 Compact is equipped with a manual safety. The decocker allows the user to safely lower the hammer without pulling the trigger putting the firearm into double-action mode. Not being familiar or having much experience with a decocker pistol, I felt very comfortable with the idea of a decocked weapon in the holster.

The design seems to be advantageous in defensive situations because no additional movement is required to fire. On the other hand, a manual safety blocks the firing mechanism and requires disengagement before firing. Although the manual safety adds an extra step when drawing from the holster, I appreciate the perceived added control.

Ergonomics further differentiate these pistols. The Shadow 2 Compact’s large, serrated slide release, deeper undercut trigger guard, and picatinny rail for accessories enhance its usability. While the PCR offers a good grip, the Shadow 2 Compact felt excellent in my hands and allowed for a higher, firmer hold. Not to say that the PCR did not feel very similar, but the Shadow just had a better feeling.

Sights and Additional Features

Both pistols share interchangeable magazines, each with a capacity of 15 rounds plus one in the chamber. The PCR includes additional features such as a lanyard loop, and a loaded chamber indicator. The Shadow 2 Compact lacks these features. The Shadow 2 Compact’s textured magazine release matches its grip panels. This is aesthetically better than the standard black rubber grips of the PCR in my hands.

The Shadow 2 Compact’s red fiber optic front sight provided faster target acquisition compared to the PCR’s three-dot sights. Additionally, the Shadow 2 Compact comes optic-ready with tall sights that allow for co-witnessing. In contrast, the PCR’s snag-free low-profile sights are slower to acquire. The Shadow’s wider serrations also make slide manipulation easier.

Shootability

Taking these pistols to the range was an enlightening experience. Having shot the Shadow 2 Compact before, I knew what to expect. The PCR was new to me, but being a CZ, I had high expectations but did not expect for it to perform the same as the Shadow 2 Compact.

The highlight of the Shadow 2 Compact is its light, smooth trigger, a hallmark of its competition pedigree. Both pistols have SA/DA triggers, but the differences are immediately noticeable. The double-action pull on both is comparable, but the single-action pull of the Shadow 2 Compact is in a league of its own. The PCR’s double-action trigger pull has significant take-up, whereas the Shadow 2 Compact’s is much shorter and more refined. The reset on the Shadow 2 Compact is also markedly better. Overall, the Shadow’s trigger lives up to the expectations set by its competition heritage.

The feel of the pistols was too close to tell a significant difference. At 10 yards, both pistols delivered impressive accuracy. While I initially needed time to adjust to the PCR’s sights and trigger pull, I quickly achieved tight groupings. Both are easy to shoot, but the Shadow 2 Compact was undeniably more enjoyable.

I was torn whether the performance of the 75 D was much less than the Shadow. I had a few folks at the range shoot them and give me their opinion. All agreed that the trigger of the Shadow was more crisp, smoother and lighter than the PCR. But were not convinced that the Shadow was worth almost double the price in their opinion.

Conclusion

The CZ Shadow 2 Compact and the CZ 75D PCR Compact cater to different audiences and needs. CZ advertises the Shadow 2 Compact as a competition carry pistol, I believe it’s more competition oriented than concealed carry. Its competitive features, such as its superior trigger, enhanced ergonomics, and optic-ready design, make it standout over the PCR. However, whether the higher price is justified remains a question for me. It likely is in question for many others who are looking for more of a carry pistol. The PCR offers a more practical solution. It is reliable with robust features at a significantly lower cost, making it ideal for defensive carry and general use. For those who prioritize superior performance and the ability to customize with accessories, the CZ Shadow 2 Compact may be the better option.

I’m not certain whether I am ready to spend the additional money for the Shadow 2 Compact. I dare not conclude whether one pistol is better than the other regardless of price. Ultimately, the choice depends on your intended purpose and whether the premium features of the Shadow 2 Compact align with your shooting goals and budget.
