Hello and welcome to another episode of the

00:00:13.737 –> 00:00:19.257
self-initiative project podcast i’m your host jim o’brien hello and welcome

00:00:19.257 –> 00:00:23.657
to podcast 43 where we’re going to be talking about safety consideration for

00:00:23.657 –> 00:00:29.017
vendors of all types but before we get into all of that good stuff i want to

00:00:29.017 –> 00:00:31.957
take a moment and just say thank you to our listeners.

00:00:32.077 –> 00:00:35.217
There’s a lot of choices out there for you guys to listen to.

00:00:35.417 –> 00:00:38.157
And somehow or another, you’ve made the decision to listen to us.

00:00:38.257 –> 00:00:40.497
And for that, I’m greatly appreciative.

00:00:40.817 –> 00:00:44.597
You know, we’ve been doing this now for a little over three and a half years

00:00:44.597 –> 00:00:49.837
where this is our 43, 43rd podcast that we have.

00:00:50.077 –> 00:00:54.317
And, you know, there’s 42 others on great subject matters, all in the personal

00:00:54.317 –> 00:00:57.057
safety, self-defense and preparedness space.

00:00:57.057 –> 00:01:01.597
And if you’re just tuning in, I’d encourage you to go back and listen to some

00:01:01.597 –> 00:01:06.137
of our other podcasts. I am more than certain that there are one or more topics

00:01:06.137 –> 00:01:10.817
in the mix that would be of interest to you in making yourself and your family more safe.

00:01:11.377 –> 00:01:14.257
And if you like what you hear and,

00:01:14.317 –> 00:01:17.397
you know, you’ve taken away a nugget of something that you’ve thought of,

00:01:17.677 –> 00:01:21.237
that made you think that you hadn’t maybe thought about before and you like

00:01:21.237 –> 00:01:25.457
what you’re hearing, we would love it if you would tell your friends and family

00:01:25.457 –> 00:01:27.457
about us. So thanks for listening.

00:01:27.697 –> 00:01:31.877
With that, I want to talk about safety consideration for vendors.

00:01:32.077 –> 00:01:36.677
And when I thought about this, I’m thinking about small vendors like you and me, right?

00:01:36.877 –> 00:01:42.817
The big guys, the retail chains and the chain restaurants, whatever.

00:01:43.537 –> 00:01:48.677
I’m more than certain, at least very hopeful that they have their own security

00:01:48.677 –> 00:01:51.837
considerations and safety precautions that they have in place.

00:01:51.837 –> 00:01:57.637
What I wanted to talk about today is safety for the little guys like you and

00:01:57.637 –> 00:02:00.917
me, you know, whether or not we’re having a garage sale or a yard sale,

00:02:01.137 –> 00:02:05.517
whether we’re selling antiques out of the barn at the local flea market,

00:02:05.517 –> 00:02:09.797
we’re selling our birdhouses or whatever at the local arts and crafts show.

00:02:09.797 –> 00:02:15.497
Or maybe we’re selling fruits and vegetables at the local farmer’s market or

00:02:15.497 –> 00:02:18.277
hot dogs or ice cream as a street vendor.

00:02:18.417 –> 00:02:23.457
You know, whatever it is, there’s a lot of examples of small vendors, right?

00:02:24.102 –> 00:02:29.462
Whatever it is, there’s just some safety things that we need to take into consideration

00:02:29.462 –> 00:02:32.642
and implement for ourselves to help keep us safe.

00:02:32.782 –> 00:02:36.142
And look, as I’ve said before, nothing’s 100%.

00:02:36.142 –> 00:02:43.342
If someone’s intent on doing harm or doing something bad or illegal and you’re

00:02:43.342 –> 00:02:46.482
involved, nothing’s going to stop them 100%.

00:02:46.482 –> 00:02:52.482
But that doesn’t mean it’s not our responsibility to make it harder for them

00:02:52.482 –> 00:02:56.102
to deter or dissuade, right? So that’s what we’re talking about.

00:02:56.442 –> 00:02:59.342
You know, while we’re not talking about the big guys necessarily,

00:02:59.342 –> 00:03:03.982
the one thing that being a vendor has in common across the board with every

00:03:03.982 –> 00:03:08.602
other vendor, regardless of size or type, is that we’re in the public space.

00:03:08.602 –> 00:03:14.542
And anytime we’re out in public, even if it means being in our front yard, right?

00:03:14.842 –> 00:03:17.182
Anytime we’re out in public or we’re dealing with the public,

00:03:17.342 –> 00:03:20.482
that means there’s the opportunity to meet and deal with strangers.

00:03:20.822 –> 00:03:24.122
Dare I say, most of what we’re going to be dealing with is strangers.

00:03:24.482 –> 00:03:27.762
And that’s why we need to be thinking about our personal safety.

00:03:27.762 –> 00:03:34.142
So when I think about, you know, the topics that I want to cover for us today.

00:03:34.542 –> 00:03:39.002
I think about three buckets or three umbrellas, whatever vision works for you.

00:03:39.142 –> 00:03:43.302
I think about keeping things locked down. I think about needing a heightened

00:03:43.302 –> 00:03:47.522
sense of situational awareness and paying attention to what’s going on around us.

00:03:47.642 –> 00:03:52.542
And then I want to talk about some ways to handle money because,

00:03:52.722 –> 00:03:56.442
you know, there’s going to be sums of cash passed between hands.

00:03:56.442 –> 00:04:00.762
And so those are the three areas I want to focus on for us today.

00:04:01.222 –> 00:04:05.122
You know, when it comes to keeping things locked down, it really depends on

00:04:05.122 –> 00:04:07.162
which context and where you are.

00:04:07.302 –> 00:04:12.482
But, you know, when I think of things, keeping things locked down, I think about my home.

00:04:12.702 –> 00:04:16.642
You know, if I had a garage sale or yard sale at my home, which I’ve done a

00:04:16.642 –> 00:04:21.002
couple of times over the years, I think about what can I do to make sure my

00:04:21.002 –> 00:04:26.242
home is locked down and secure while I’m working said yard sale, whatever.

00:04:26.442 –> 00:04:30.782
And the first place I go, which is the most obvious, is keep your doors locked.

00:04:31.022 –> 00:04:35.222
You know, the best policy that you can have for yourself and your family as

00:04:35.222 –> 00:04:41.102
far as safety is keeping perfectly good strangers out of your home.

00:04:41.322 –> 00:04:44.782
That’s first and foremost. So whether it’s the front door, the back door,

00:04:44.822 –> 00:04:50.102
or that door that runs between your garage or carport and the mudroom or the

00:04:50.102 –> 00:04:52.622
kitchen, keeping those locked at all times.

00:04:52.622 –> 00:04:57.362
Even if you leave the yard cell for a moment and go inside to go to the bathroom,

00:04:57.662 –> 00:04:59.182
lock that door behind you.

00:04:59.282 –> 00:05:02.102
You just don’t want strangers coming into your house.

00:05:02.242 –> 00:05:05.262
With that being said, there’s an important boundary, I think,

00:05:05.342 –> 00:05:09.842
and this is just a personal choice and hopefully you’ll consider it as important and do the same.

00:05:10.923 –> 00:05:15.523
My house doesn’t have a public restroom. Again, I don’t want perfectly good

00:05:15.523 –> 00:05:17.123
strangers coming into my house.

00:05:17.563 –> 00:05:21.483
If someone shows up with a small child and they’re like, can we go to the bathroom?

00:05:21.723 –> 00:05:25.323
It’s okay to say no. It’s your home. You can do with it what you may.

00:05:25.803 –> 00:05:32.743
Now, if you are overwhelmed by guilt and it is a small child involved or whatever, you know,

00:05:33.323 –> 00:05:37.443
tugs at your heartstrings to make you forget your boundaries for a moment,

00:05:37.983 –> 00:05:41.903
then I would certainly recommend accompanying them into the house,

00:05:42.203 –> 00:05:44.663
waiting on them, and then escorting them back out.

00:05:45.043 –> 00:05:49.223
That way, there’s minimal time for them to case the house, you know,

00:05:49.343 –> 00:05:52.523
look over things, quote unquote, get lost, whatever.

00:05:53.163 –> 00:05:58.403
But if you want to avoid all of that, simply establishing the boundary ahead

00:05:58.403 –> 00:06:01.763
of time that, look, guys, we’re not going to let strangers into our house.

00:06:01.903 –> 00:06:04.883
It’s okay to say no. So no public restrooms.

00:06:05.283 –> 00:06:09.103
Talking about garages, I just assume keep my door down.

00:06:09.463 –> 00:06:14.083
As a tip, which isn’t really safety related, but it is because again,

00:06:14.283 –> 00:06:18.603
it keeps strangers out of your house, is run a utility cord,

00:06:18.603 –> 00:06:22.503
a power cord out from underneath the garage door into the driveway,

00:06:22.503 –> 00:06:24.183
into the front yard, whatever it is.

00:06:24.243 –> 00:06:28.923
That way you can power any electrical equipment that you have for sale and demo

00:06:28.923 –> 00:06:32.563
it in the front yard again without allowing anyone into the house.

00:06:33.321 –> 00:06:40.101
Now, look, I know garage sale means just that maybe there’s a rainstorm anticipated.

00:06:40.101 –> 00:06:44.601
And so you want to set up your sales items in your garage. Okay.

00:06:44.941 –> 00:06:47.201
Well, that still means a couple of things.

00:06:47.601 –> 00:06:52.361
One is you still want to keep that door between the garage and inside of your

00:06:52.361 –> 00:06:53.941
house locked at all times.

00:06:54.181 –> 00:06:58.601
And again, even if you go inside for a moment, lock it behind you so no one

00:06:58.601 –> 00:07:02.301
can accidentally stumble in and find their way into your house.

00:07:02.921 –> 00:07:10.181
So keep your door locked. And then there needs to be somebody on duty in your garage at all times.

00:07:10.481 –> 00:07:15.161
Because even if you’re selling things in your garage, I’m sure not unless you

00:07:15.161 –> 00:07:16.921
have a perfectly spotless garage.

00:07:17.061 –> 00:07:21.181
I’m sure other things, not everything in your garage is for sale.

00:07:21.421 –> 00:07:27.261
So you don’t want those strangers, you know, rummaging through your tool chest

00:07:27.261 –> 00:07:29.921
if tools in your tool chest aren’t for sale.

00:07:30.501 –> 00:07:35.781
So be sure to do a good job of separating what is for sale and what isn’t if

00:07:35.781 –> 00:07:40.361
you’re going to open up that garage and actually have an in-the-garage garage sale.

00:07:40.521 –> 00:07:45.541
With that being said, in light of this pandemic that we’re in the midst of right

00:07:45.541 –> 00:07:48.621
now, and if you’re concerned about social distancing,

00:07:48.941 –> 00:07:53.141
which, like myself, I like to keep distance between me and others at all times

00:07:53.141 –> 00:07:58.481
anyway, I might recommend waiting to a better day to do it, sunny day,

00:07:58.521 –> 00:08:03.121
and just doing it out in the yard and having more of a yard sale.

00:08:03.361 –> 00:08:06.381
This allows everyone to get more fresh air.

00:08:06.561 –> 00:08:10.461
It might allow for better social distancing. And most importantly,

00:08:10.661 –> 00:08:14.441
it’s going to allow you to keep your house more fully locked down.

00:08:14.921 –> 00:08:18.941
When I think about locking down, I also think about cars, vehicles,

00:08:18.941 –> 00:08:23.641
trucks, whatever you’ve got, you need to keep those doors locked and you need

00:08:23.641 –> 00:08:25.421
to keep things out of plain sight.

00:08:25.641 –> 00:08:28.081
Look, you got a bunch of perfectly good strangers around.

00:08:28.561 –> 00:08:32.361
Nothing says they’re not scoping out things to find weak points,

00:08:32.361 –> 00:08:36.521
right? That they can take advantage of later. So.

00:08:37.183 –> 00:08:42.763
This notion of keeping things locked down, it goes beyond your booth.

00:08:42.883 –> 00:08:44.143
It goes beyond your home.

00:08:44.403 –> 00:08:48.083
Lock those car doors and keep things out of plain sight.

00:08:48.583 –> 00:08:52.423
Shove them in the glove compartment box. Shove them underneath the front seat.

00:08:52.683 –> 00:08:56.423
Put them in the trunk would probably be the best place. In my opinion,

00:08:56.563 –> 00:09:00.283
it is the best place if you’ve got to keep it in the car. Put it in the trunk. Lock it away.

00:09:00.743 –> 00:09:05.903
When I think about keeping things locked down, if I’m a jewelry vendor or something like that,

00:09:05.903 –> 00:09:11.263
or I have small expensive items or more expensive items, it’s probably a good

00:09:11.263 –> 00:09:17.523
idea that I look to invest into some lockable glass or plexiglass casing.

00:09:17.843 –> 00:09:23.343
Of course, I’m gonna wanna stay near those more expensive items at all times

00:09:23.343 –> 00:09:27.843
just to keep an extra eye out, but investing in some sort of locking mechanism

00:09:27.843 –> 00:09:32.263
display, lockable display mechanism is probably gonna be best there too.

00:09:32.883 –> 00:09:36.163
Additionally, when I think about keeping things locked down,

00:09:36.383 –> 00:09:38.863
I think about placement of items.

00:09:38.863 –> 00:09:43.103
If I’m having a cell, and of course, you know, a yard sale is different than

00:09:43.103 –> 00:09:46.763
if you’re out of working a booth at an arts and craft where you’re selling maybe

00:09:46.763 –> 00:09:49.343
some higher end jewelry, for example.

00:09:49.503 –> 00:09:53.003
You know, in those cases, I’m probably sitting right there. So that’s in a way

00:09:53.003 –> 00:09:54.263
keeping things locked down.

00:09:54.363 –> 00:09:59.343
And of course, we just talked about maybe considering lockable cases for those sorts of items too.

00:09:59.503 –> 00:10:02.943
But when I think of keeping things locked down, I think,

00:10:03.243 –> 00:10:07.803
okay, well, if I’ve got a yard sale, I don’t want to put my most expensive items

00:10:07.803 –> 00:10:13.063
down along the street side, right along the curb, because that potentially makes

00:10:13.063 –> 00:10:16.403
it easier for someone to come along and swipe them and run off.

00:10:16.523 –> 00:10:22.883
I want to keep expensive items further away from the street and closer to me

00:10:22.883 –> 00:10:25.263
and where I’m hanging out most of the time.

00:10:25.583 –> 00:10:29.923
And I’ll say part of that too is, you know, you don’t want to go it alone.

00:10:29.923 –> 00:10:33.783
If you can avoid it, you want to have help when you’re doing a yard sale or

00:10:33.783 –> 00:10:38.243
when you’re working a booth, because that gets an extra set of eyes that allows

00:10:38.243 –> 00:10:43.243
you to more easily take breaks while still keeping an eye on everything and keeping it, you know,

00:10:43.583 –> 00:10:45.923
keeping things under control and paying attention, you know,

00:10:45.983 –> 00:10:48.443
that situational awareness that we talked about.

00:10:48.643 –> 00:10:54.903
But keeping your expensive items away from the open public area and closer where

00:10:54.903 –> 00:10:57.183
you can keep a better eye on it is important.

00:10:57.743 –> 00:11:03.083
And last, I want to mention that in the context of keeping things locked down.

00:11:03.763 –> 00:11:08.443
Especially when you’re home, you know, there’s the interview.

00:11:08.443 –> 00:11:12.003
And what I’m talking about specifically with the interview,

00:11:12.263 –> 00:11:16.683
my air quotes, is when you’ve got a perfectly good stranger,

00:11:16.683 –> 00:11:20.763
and this will happen with contractors sometimes when And you get those shady

00:11:20.763 –> 00:11:25.563
folks that your spidey senses are going off about or your intuition’s telling

00:11:25.563 –> 00:11:27.403
you something’s off. And.

00:11:28.442 –> 00:11:33.442
Feel like something’s really off because they start asking you seemingly intrusive

00:11:33.442 –> 00:11:38.762
or personal questions like, you know, Hey, does your security cameras work?

00:11:38.962 –> 00:11:42.702
Hey, are those lights on the back of the house? Do they actually come on or

00:11:42.702 –> 00:11:44.322
are they triggered by motion?

00:11:44.562 –> 00:11:49.402
You know, just, and they may not be that obvious, but when they start asking

00:11:49.402 –> 00:11:54.562
you questions around yourself or your family or your house and the way things are set up,

00:11:54.982 –> 00:11:59.762
those are red flags and you don’t have to answer those questions and you don’t

00:11:59.762 –> 00:12:04.702
necessarily have to be rude about your response, but you can also lie as well.

00:12:04.902 –> 00:12:08.622
This again is perfectly good stranger. There’s no reason for them to be asking

00:12:08.622 –> 00:12:09.682
those sorts of questions.

00:12:09.882 –> 00:12:14.542
So kind of on that notion of keeping things locked down, pay attention when

00:12:14.542 –> 00:12:18.722
someone’s getting a little too buddy buddy and asking too many questions and

00:12:18.722 –> 00:12:21.582
don’t feel obligated to give them a truthful answer.

00:12:21.762 –> 00:12:24.562
And in fact, shut that interview down if you can.

00:12:25.002 –> 00:12:28.822
Next, I want to talk about situational awareness. And look, in the personal

00:12:28.822 –> 00:12:33.242
safety space, situational awareness is something that’s talked about all the time.

00:12:33.362 –> 00:12:37.882
And rightfully so, because if you practice good situational awareness.

00:12:38.482 –> 00:12:44.682
You’re more than likely going to be able to avoid 90 plus percent of anything

00:12:44.682 –> 00:12:45.742
that could happen to you.

00:12:45.822 –> 00:12:49.502
Now, that’s not to say that you’re going to avoid every ambush and things like that.

00:12:49.602 –> 00:12:55.142
But when it comes to being a small vendor, having good situational awareness is key.

00:12:55.362 –> 00:13:00.502
And what we typically mean by situational awareness is having kind of an understanding

00:13:00.502 –> 00:13:07.802
of what’s normal, what a baseline is, and then paying attention when we see anomalies to that. So.

00:13:08.547 –> 00:13:15.527
Maybe I’m working a yard sale, or maybe I’m working the arts and crafts fair

00:13:15.527 –> 00:13:18.927
in the summer, and it’s 95 degrees out.

00:13:19.107 –> 00:13:25.207
And I’ve got a younger gentleman hanging in or around my booth that’s wearing

00:13:25.207 –> 00:13:29.447
blue jeans and an oversized button-up trench coat.

00:13:29.647 –> 00:13:33.307
Now, who’s to say what he’s doing there that way?

00:13:33.407 –> 00:13:38.267
Maybe he’s just really cold nature. But that is an example of an anomaly that

00:13:38.267 –> 00:13:43.747
you wouldn’t expect to see on a 95 plus degree degree day outside. Right.

00:13:44.587 –> 00:13:49.547
Maybe again, I’m at the yard cell and maybe I get a pack of teenagers,

00:13:49.547 –> 00:13:52.727
what appears to be teenagers again in this pandemic.

00:13:52.727 –> 00:13:58.207
Maybe they’ve all shown up with masks on and they’re the type of characters

00:13:58.207 –> 00:14:01.127
that have their pants down behind their knees. Right.

00:14:01.307 –> 00:14:04.947
That that type. And they’ve all got bandanas on their head. Now,

00:14:05.127 –> 00:14:09.627
again, we want to be cautious about profiling, but it’s okay to profile.

00:14:09.727 –> 00:14:13.087
And I’m just going to say that here, too. We all profile in our heads anyway.

00:14:13.507 –> 00:14:17.087
It’s not being about judgmental and just assuming the worst of people,

00:14:17.107 –> 00:14:20.367
but it is recognizing when things are out of the norm.

00:14:20.547 –> 00:14:22.887
No one else in the yard sale is dressed that way.

00:14:23.207 –> 00:14:27.447
And no one else outside that day is wearing a mask. Just for examples,

00:14:27.507 –> 00:14:29.007
I’m just giving a couple of examples.

00:14:29.227 –> 00:14:33.707
So really paying attention, figuring out what appears to be normal for what

00:14:33.707 –> 00:14:39.127
you’re doing and where you’re at at that time, and then seeing things that stand

00:14:39.127 –> 00:14:42.067
out to you, that’s where you want to focus your attention.

00:14:42.387 –> 00:14:49.947
So situational awareness plays a super important role in honestly knowing what’s

00:14:49.947 –> 00:14:54.587
going on around us, but in the context of personal safety.

00:14:55.170 –> 00:15:00.590
Helping us better do a better job and avoiding bad things potentially in the first place.

00:15:00.970 –> 00:15:06.030
So again, being out in the public, we really want to be on a heightened sense

00:15:06.030 –> 00:15:10.730
of alert and paying attention to what’s going on around us. And that includes

00:15:10.730 –> 00:15:12.150
if we have small kids, right?

00:15:12.230 –> 00:15:16.990
If we’ve got kids or pets with us, we need to be paying attention to them at all times.

00:15:17.110 –> 00:15:19.310
So it’s really not much different.

00:15:19.450 –> 00:15:24.170
The last thing that I want to talk about in our brief podcast today is handling of money.

00:15:24.590 –> 00:15:29.790
And look, there’s a lot of cash usually passed around at these places,

00:15:29.790 –> 00:15:33.770
at these venues, whether it’s the flea market, the arts and crafts or the yard sale.

00:15:34.050 –> 00:15:39.130
Honestly, one yard sale I had a number of years ago, I think I wound up making

00:15:39.130 –> 00:15:44.170
like near a thousand dollars in a day, only working five or six hours.

00:15:44.370 –> 00:15:47.710
We had some big ticket items out there and got very lucky. But,

00:15:47.850 –> 00:15:51.710
you know, my point is that there can be an exorbitant amount of cash floating around.

00:15:51.930 –> 00:15:56.070
And so whether you’re working a fair, a yard sale, you’re a street vendor,

00:15:56.290 –> 00:15:59.370
you kind of want to come up with a system for handling that cash.

00:15:59.490 –> 00:16:04.850
Now, look, some people at fairs insist upon having a till that’s lockable.

00:16:05.370 –> 00:16:11.030
That’s great if someone constantly is holding that till or over that till, working that till.

00:16:12.130 –> 00:16:16.550
But having a till means all your cash or a good chunk of your cash,

00:16:16.670 –> 00:16:18.490
I’m assuming, is in that till.

00:16:18.670 –> 00:16:22.070
And that’s really not advisable because all I need to do is grab that till and

00:16:22.070 –> 00:16:24.470
run, right? You’re making it easier for me.

00:16:24.810 –> 00:16:29.650
So instead, what I would recommend is keeping your cash on you.

00:16:29.870 –> 00:16:35.930
And then as you have time doing a cash drop, much less like a restaurant would

00:16:35.930 –> 00:16:40.970
do throughout the day, when you start to accumulate some bigger bills or you’re

00:16:40.970 –> 00:16:42.570
starting to get a wad of cash,

00:16:42.910 –> 00:16:47.570
looking to take an opportunity to, you know, go back to the car and put some

00:16:47.570 –> 00:16:52.850
into the trunk, go into the house and drop it off and come right back out again.

00:16:53.350 –> 00:16:57.490
Again, being cautious of what’s going on around you, making sure you’re not

00:16:57.490 –> 00:16:59.490
being followed and making sure

00:16:59.490 –> 00:17:03.810
your business partner or your brother or whoever is there, your friend,

00:17:03.970 –> 00:17:08.710
whoever’s there with you knows that you’re taking a quick break to do those cash drop.

00:17:08.930 –> 00:17:13.030
And, you know, coordinating with your partner on the job is part of it too,

00:17:13.150 –> 00:17:14.550
just as a sidebar note, right?

00:17:14.770 –> 00:17:17.750
Communicating with one another, whether you’ve got to go to the bathroom or

00:17:17.750 –> 00:17:20.090
you need to get rid of some cash, whatever it might be.

00:17:20.230 –> 00:17:23.230
But when it comes to cash, we need to get a system in place.

00:17:23.410 –> 00:17:27.590
So what I recommend doing, I’m not a big fan of fanny packs,

00:17:27.730 –> 00:17:32.550
but that’s obviously a way, a place of keeping cash that’s really convenient.

00:17:32.550 –> 00:17:36.070
You can put it along the front line of your body yourself and have it right

00:17:36.070 –> 00:17:37.430
there to work in and out of.

00:17:38.370 –> 00:17:43.470
But for me, I like to keep small bills in one pocket and bigger bills in the other.

00:17:43.630 –> 00:17:48.390
So if someone does happen to ask me for the cash on me, I will try to give them

00:17:48.390 –> 00:17:51.330
the small bills first. Now that might not work out.

00:17:51.948 –> 00:17:55.248
But typically, they’re going to be in a hurry. I’m going to give them all I

00:17:55.248 –> 00:17:57.808
got, and that’s going to be it, hopefully.

00:17:58.048 –> 00:18:05.108
May or may not work. Again, nothing’s 100%, but we’re trying to reduce our negative impacts, right?

00:18:05.648 –> 00:18:10.308
So I like to keep smaller bills in one pocket and larger bills in the other.

00:18:10.868 –> 00:18:14.108
And then at some point, I want to do some type of cash drop.

00:18:14.308 –> 00:18:18.968
Again, whether it’s going back to my car, coordinating with my partner on site,

00:18:19.148 –> 00:18:22.108
letting them know what I’m doing, where I’ll be, paying attention,

00:18:22.248 –> 00:18:23.588
making sure I’m not being followed,

00:18:24.228 –> 00:18:28.828
dropping that money off in the trunk as quickly as possible or in the house

00:18:28.828 –> 00:18:31.088
as quickly as possible, and then coming back out.

00:18:31.268 –> 00:18:33.948
And again, we don’t want to leave that out in plain sight.

00:18:34.368 –> 00:18:38.128
Speaking of plain sight, one of the things that I see out in public a lot of

00:18:38.128 –> 00:18:42.228
people counting out large amount of cash out in the open, right,

00:18:42.348 –> 00:18:43.648
for the whole world to see.

00:18:44.248 –> 00:18:49.488
Try to avoid doing that, You know, count it underneath the table at your booth, worst case, right?

00:18:49.928 –> 00:18:52.448
Turn around and keep it close to yourself.

00:18:53.168 –> 00:18:57.268
Step behind the curtain. If you’ve got to count a lot of cash,

00:18:57.548 –> 00:19:03.568
excuse yourself and go inside the house or wherever it is. You see what I’m saying?

00:19:03.808 –> 00:19:10.788
Like avoid doing the big cash count out exposed to the world because that’s

00:19:10.788 –> 00:19:14.628
just showing folks what you got. And you’re really making yourself a target

00:19:14.628 –> 00:19:17.988
anytime you count cash out in public.

00:19:18.308 –> 00:19:25.688
So don’t do it. When it comes to handling cash, you know, you want to be cautious of the scammers.

00:19:25.848 –> 00:19:27.908
I remember years and years and years

00:19:27.908 –> 00:19:31.488
ago, I was working a part-time job is actually my first part-time job.

00:19:31.648 –> 00:19:35.628
And I got scammed. A guy gave me a $10 bill, if I remember right,

00:19:35.708 –> 00:19:41.148
and I gave him his cash, his change back after his purchase of his drink or whatever.

00:19:41.408 –> 00:19:49.648
And he tried to tell me he’d given me a $20 bill and got very vocal about it and very angry at me.

00:19:49.808 –> 00:19:54.508
And I fell for it, right, because I was a kid.

00:19:54.508 –> 00:19:58.768
I was 15 at the time, and I was a kid, and I felt the pressure of,

00:19:58.768 –> 00:20:00.968
you know, doing right by him.

00:20:00.968 –> 00:20:06.008
And so I gave him back the incorrect amount of change and I didn’t get in trouble

00:20:06.008 –> 00:20:10.168
for it, but I did tell my supervisor and it was a big mess and it was an important lesson.

00:20:10.168 –> 00:20:15.228
So, you know, when you’re handling cash, you want to be smart in how you handle

00:20:15.228 –> 00:20:17.008
it and how you’re communicating.

00:20:17.388 –> 00:20:26.288
You know, an easy way to help thwart that scam is anytime you receive denomination and bill, repeat it.

00:20:26.388 –> 00:20:28.808
When you take it from the individual, repeat it back.

00:20:28.968 –> 00:20:34.588
Say, okay, out of 10 or out of 20, whatever it is. And that way you’re vocalizing,

00:20:34.588 –> 00:20:37.528
you’re letting them know you’re aware and that you’re paying attention.

00:20:37.528 –> 00:20:41.148
And hopefully those around you will also hear what you’re saying.

00:20:41.408 –> 00:20:44.148
So that’s a tip I’d give you there as well.

00:20:44.648 –> 00:20:48.788
And I know that for most smaller vendors, you’re not going to have cat.

00:20:49.228 –> 00:20:50.828
You’re not going to have.

00:20:51.606 –> 00:20:56.226
Cash registers. But if you do, one tip that I picked up working in retail and

00:20:56.226 –> 00:21:00.006
in the restaurant business over the years is when you get big bills,

00:21:00.206 –> 00:21:05.846
like let’s say 50s and 100s, go ahead and put them under the drawer and not in the drawer.

00:21:06.086 –> 00:21:11.086
Again, if someone comes up, that extra step of having to remove the drawer to

00:21:11.086 –> 00:21:13.386
get that cash out is going to slow them down.

00:21:13.746 –> 00:21:18.326
So at least by keeping those bigger bills out of the drawer and underneath it,

00:21:18.446 –> 00:21:23.166
you’ve made it less likely that they’re going to be able to get to those as quickly.

00:21:23.606 –> 00:21:28.246
And therefore the hope is, is that they don’t stick around knowing that,

00:21:28.246 –> 00:21:31.826
that trick, but that’s something else that you can do if you’re happened to

00:21:31.826 –> 00:21:36.686
be using a cash register, or if you’ve opted to use a till,

00:21:36.966 –> 00:21:39.526
you know, the same policy applies there too, right?

00:21:39.666 –> 00:21:42.846
Keeping those bigger bills underneath the main area.

00:21:43.086 –> 00:21:48.506
If you have a drawer inside there, so to speak, but again, if they grab the

00:21:48.506 –> 00:21:51.786
till, of course, that’s not going to do you any good, But it’s more about the

00:21:51.786 –> 00:21:55.146
grab and run than it is taking the whole thing in that case, too.

00:21:55.346 –> 00:21:59.826
The biggest thing that I’d say about cash and, you know, if you think of things,

00:22:00.046 –> 00:22:04.046
please feel free to email us or drop a DM and our Instagram posts.

00:22:04.446 –> 00:22:08.426
But the biggest thing I’d say about cash is when you’re done,

00:22:08.646 –> 00:22:13.606
when you’re done for the day, get that cash to the bank as quickly as possible.

00:22:13.826 –> 00:22:17.266
And of course, you know, ideally, you don’t want to go after dark.

00:22:17.266 –> 00:22:21.526
You don’t want to be walking up to ATMs after dark, especially if you’re by yourself.

00:22:21.826 –> 00:22:28.186
So be smart about when you go to the bank, but get that cash to the bank as quickly as possible.

00:22:28.446 –> 00:22:33.506
You don’t want to keep large amounts of cash on your person for long extended periods of time.

00:22:33.686 –> 00:22:39.006
And you shouldn’t have a lot of big cash in your home, especially if someone

00:22:39.006 –> 00:22:41.006
knows that you’ve had it.

00:22:41.486 –> 00:22:44.926
Not saying that a yard sale is going to turn into a home invasion.

00:22:44.926 –> 00:22:50.466
We’re not using scare tactics, but home invasions are generally caused when…

00:22:51.183 –> 00:22:56.783
Someone that’s been following your patterns or is aware of what you’re doing and what you’ve got.

00:22:57.383 –> 00:23:04.163
Home invasions a lot of time are driven by the known fact that there’s large

00:23:04.163 –> 00:23:06.963
amount of cash and or drugs in a home.

00:23:08.003 –> 00:23:13.583
And so you don’t want to make yourself unintentionally a target of home invasion.

00:23:13.583 –> 00:23:17.163
That’s probably the extreme of what could happen.

00:23:17.163 –> 00:23:20.503
But again the best thing that you can do after

00:23:20.503 –> 00:23:23.363
playing with cash so much cash in

00:23:23.363 –> 00:23:26.183
the day is get it to the bank as soon as

00:23:26.183 –> 00:23:30.283
you possibly can and get it deposited and then of course the last thing I’m

00:23:30.283 –> 00:23:34.903
going to say is one thing for you to consider if you’re not already is you know

00:23:34.903 –> 00:23:40.143
there’s a lot of online payment options these days I can think of three or four

00:23:40.143 –> 00:23:43.863
off the top of my head yes they charge fees,

00:23:44.203 –> 00:23:46.423
but it is an alternative.

00:23:46.683 –> 00:23:50.303
It’s a convenient alternative for people that want to buy things from you.

00:23:50.903 –> 00:23:55.843
And most importantly, it reduces the amount of cash being passed around.

00:23:55.843 –> 00:24:01.403
So I would recommend looking into that as an option if you are so inclined.

00:24:01.623 –> 00:24:06.803
Just the last couple of things I want to mention here as far as safety goes

00:24:06.803 –> 00:24:10.483
and generally, you know, Being a gun person, I have to say this,

00:24:10.683 –> 00:24:14.123
you know, if you’re going to carry a gun on your person and assuming the venue

00:24:14.123 –> 00:24:15.863
that you’re working in allows it.

00:24:16.569 –> 00:24:21.109
And if they don’t have a formal policy, then that means it is allowed.

00:24:21.249 –> 00:24:25.489
But if you’re going to carry, carry concealed. Don’t carry out in the open.

00:24:25.969 –> 00:24:31.409
You don’t want to make yourself a target, and you don’t want to scare off your customers, right?

00:24:31.549 –> 00:24:34.429
Most importantly, you’re there to sell and make money.

00:24:34.829 –> 00:24:40.729
Seeing a gun exposed might intimidate some people, or they may wonder why you need a gun.

00:24:41.109 –> 00:24:46.489
You just don’t want to be that person. So if you’re going to carry and you have

00:24:46.489 –> 00:24:49.549
the right to carry concealed, in other words, you’re carrying legally,

00:24:49.689 –> 00:24:52.909
you have a permit, if you’re required to have a permit in your area,

00:24:53.509 –> 00:24:59.409
carry concealed and just know that if you think the use of a gun is going to

00:24:59.409 –> 00:25:04.849
be required, just remember you are in public and there’s probably a lot of people around you.

00:25:04.949 –> 00:25:10.009
So that is points of consideration when you are carrying a firearm in public,

00:25:10.169 –> 00:25:11.669
certainly like any other time.

00:25:12.149 –> 00:25:16.709
And then the last thing that I want to mention, too, is stay hydrated,

00:25:17.129 –> 00:25:20.349
you know, especially if you’re out in the heat like we talked about earlier,

00:25:20.509 –> 00:25:24.869
the 95-degree day in the summer yard sale.

00:25:25.749 –> 00:25:29.569
Make sure you and the kids stay hydrated, you know, and have some snacks.

00:25:29.569 –> 00:25:33.689
If you’re a vendor, you know, at an arts and crafts fair or the flea market,

00:25:34.069 –> 00:25:37.369
be sure to take plenty of water and snacks because you’re probably not going

00:25:37.369 –> 00:25:42.069
to be going off to eat a meal during the day. So I recommend keeping water and

00:25:42.069 –> 00:25:43.349
snacks on hand, certainly.

00:25:44.329 –> 00:25:48.909
So with that, that concludes our podcast. This one I wanted to keep short and sweet.

00:25:48.969 –> 00:25:52.029
It’s a little longer than I thought it was going to be, but we’ll come in here

00:25:52.029 –> 00:25:53.269
right at the 30-minute mark.

00:25:53.469 –> 00:25:57.969
I hope you’ve taken away something from this and just some thoughts around keeping

00:25:57.969 –> 00:26:02.169
things locked down, having a heightened sense of situational awareness,

00:26:02.669 –> 00:26:07.249
and some tips and tricks on how to better handle that cash that you are going

00:26:07.249 –> 00:26:11.169
to have to deal with as you’re selling. And thanks for listening.

00:26:11.440 –> 00:26:31.057
Music.
