Getting Started with Firearms

AR-15 and semi-auto pistol with ammo

Entering the world of firearms can be thrilling yet sometimes daunting for newcomers. Whether for target shooting, self-defense, competition, or hunting, everyone has their reason(s) for wanting a firearm. Beginners must prioritize safety, understand the purchasing process, and choose a firearm suited to them and their needs. OwnGuard Solutions provides you with resources to guide you on how to get started with firearms.

We always put firearm safety first. Whether just starting out or a seasoned shooter, firearm safety is paramount. Shooters need to learn and follow the gun safety rules and be familiar with their firearm’s user manual. Consider enrolling in one of the many firearms-focused classes we offer. When buying your first firearm, you will likely have a lot of questions, including what firearm should you buy for yourself. Buying a firearm requires research and experimentation. There is no one right answer, as like so often times, it depends. It is not uncommon for those just starting out to want to know a specific firearm they should purchase or at least consider and just have someone tell them what it is. There are so many choices on the market today and our favorites, or choices, might not be right for you. And ladies… If anyone ever tells you ‘just buy a revolver,’ walk away. Sure. Maybe you ultimately land on a revolver for yourself; but it does not mean it is the right choice for YOU from the start. You have to go find what works for you or which gun you think you can learn to shoot well… and safely.

Unlike some advice you may receive in your endeavor, we will tell you to try a few and see what works and which you like the best. Borrow from friends or family, or better yet, go to the range with them! You should also consider renting some of the ones you think you might like or be interested in. Do not let someone persuade you into buying what they think you need to purchase. Do your research and try them out. Think about what you want the firearm for and whether a particular firearm is something you are going to want to shoot and be able to manage.

You’ll need to pass background checks and, in some areas, obtain permits. Consider the purpose or reason you are looking to purchase a gun in the first place, whether it be for target practice, home defense, concealed carry, or competition, as this will help shape your choice. Be sure to budget for the firearm, ammunition, secure storage, and training. And you will want to become familiar with your state’s laws too, so you know how you can either carry or transport your firearms as well. Don’t forget your ear and eye protection!

Your ideal firearm depends on your goals, comfort, and experience, not anyone else’s. Consider ergonomics, recoil management, and maintenance to ensure a good fit for you, your lifestyle, and your purpose for having the firearm. By focusing on safety and selecting a firearm that matches your needs, you’ll lay a solid foundation for responsible and confident gun ownership. And then, you’re set to enjoy the world of firearms and shooting. OwnGuard Solutions is here to help you on your journey.
